Dan Poirier
& Sam Phillips
The
morning after the Battle of the
Tenaru, the 1st Battalion came around, in an enveloping movement
and practically annihilated all the survivors of the attack. Later,
the few that were left took off. We lost only two guys. There were
dead Japs everywhere, so many, they were bulldozed into a pit. It
started to smell, it was hot. I remember the photograph
the dead on the sandbar... yes, that was it was like. There were
about six hundred dead japanese. At high tide the river there was
waist deep, at low tide, ankle deep. This was our first action.
