When we first saw the island, we were scared, I didn’t know what was gonna happen. But, it wasn’t too bad, we went in behind the rest of the division. I was the assistant gunner. I handed the round to the gunner, who sited the mortar and dropped in the pipe, that’s how it worked. We set up along the Matanikau River, and waited there... until the Japanese attacked.
