Model
89 50mm Grenade Discharger
Misnamed the "Knee Mortar" by Allied Forces, who
incorrectly beleived the weapon was fired from the knee.
This
weapon entered the Japanese arsenal in 1929. It was a small,
light weight, muzzle-fed, rifled weapon which was widely used
by the Japanese Army, allowing for higly mobile mortar support
by the infanrtyman - a truely unique concept that was not
present in American infantry forces.
The
standard projectile was a high explosive shell. Ranges were
controlled by rotation of the knurled
range knob. The weapon was trigger fired, and there were
two range scales. One provided ranges of 120-670 meters for
the use of the Model 89 HE shell.
The other range was from 50-170 meters for use with the Model
91 grenade. |
