Marine
Corps Personal Equipment
Marines on Guadalcanal traveled with a range of personal equipment.
Thier canteens were one of the most important items, for without
water a soldier would quickly expire in the jungle heat. Also,
the practice of carrying two canteens quickly developed.
Dog
Tags were metal discs worn on a string around the neck. Dog
tags from the the thousands of Americans that passed through
the island - either during the fighting or after it was secured,
are occasionlly located to this day. Food on Guadalcanal was
often supplemented with captured Japanese rice, from the stores
captured in the first days of the landing. Or, an occasional
pancake for breakfast.
Entrenching
tool was used to dig foxholes and fighting positions. Many
of these are still visible to the day on the ridgelines occupied
by the Marines and Japanese. Other equipment included the
helmet, belt
and webbing, and boots that
made the Marine uniform on Guadalcanal complete. |
